THE SOCIETY for Psychical Research was set up in London in 1882, the first scientific organisation ever to examine claims of psychic and paranormal phenomena. We hold no corporate view about their existence or meaning; rather, our purpose is to gather information and foster understanding through research and education.
We are a registered charity run by a council of elected members, with committees overseeing various activities. Past presidents have included philosophers William James and Henri Bergson, scientists William Crookes, John Strutt (Lord Rayleigh) and Charles Richet, and British conservative prime minister Arthur Balfour. We are always looking to increase our funding for research and education, through donations and bequests.
Our members represent a variety of academic and professional interests all over the world. We welcome active researchers and volunteer helpers, also those who wish to learn about the subject.
Today, the SPR continues to promote and support the main areas of psychical research, carrying out field investigations, surveys and experimental work. It holds no corporate view about the true origin and meaning of psi – as telepathic and other psychical phenomena are now collectively termed – and debate among its members with regard to particular subjects is often vigorous. However, it’s fair to say that from the earliest times the consensus view of its members – and of the psi research community in general – has been that psi is real, and that while the phenomena should certainly be explained in scientific terms, such a science does not at present exist.
Regular events are organised at our Head Office in Kensington ranging from lectures, demonstrations, discussion forums and study days plus an annual conference is held at a different residential venue to share and discuss a wide range of subjects.

Telepathy is the the term used to refer to the ability to transmit and receive information from another being by other means than known sensory communication i.e., verbal or physical interaction. Whilst this is usually considered to be a form of thought transference, it can range from simple emotions or feelings emanating from animals, to concepts, words and sentences produced by human beings.
There are various degrees of telepathy, starting with empathy which is the ability to feel the emotions of others and understand that emotion, sometimes to the extent that it feels like your own, however, Empaths do not always progress to becoming Telepathic, and Telepaths do not always feel empathy with animals, people or the world around them, both may prefer to shut out the mental or sensory noise except when it is absolutely necessary.
The most common occurrence of telepathy may be exhibited by close friends or family members, especially or other children of multiple birth who even or especially when separated and raised by different families in locations miles apart, will exhibit unexplained knowledge of their sibling or when reunited after years without prior meeting, have similar hair styles and dress code or experience the same emotions, stress and concerns at the same time as their sibling even when they have no knowledge of their existence.
Despite many scientific tests and attempts to debunk Telepathy, there is no doubt that some people are capable of knowing our thoughts when directed to focus on an individual, even when not present in the room. This mind to mind communication is difficult to prove consistently to the satisfaction of the regular scientific community.
In the parapsychology world, telepathy is considered to be a potential example of psychic ability and Zenner Cards became a popular method of testing followed by the Ganzfeld experiment but in psychiatry telepathy is considered to be a symptom of psychosis!
The following videos include demonstration, discussion and methods of testing for telepathy.
Precognition is the ability to foresee future events that cannot be determined by presently available information. A Premonition is an advanced view of the future, sometimes a warning or circumstance which may appear in various forms, in dreams or as a feeling or unexplained ‘knowing’ that an event will occur before it happens.
